New Animal Fighting Legislation Introduced!

On Tuesday, Senator Buzz Thomas introduced legislation developed by the Michigan Humane Society to address animal fighting. Animal fighting is a violent activity where animals are forced to fight, sometimes to the death, merely for the profit and enjoyment of the people involved. Animals that are fought or used as “bait” can often experience painful and life threatening injuries.

This legislation would prohibit the solicitation of animal fighting and help curb the growing problem of street fighting. While organized animal fighting remains a serious problem, street fighting is growing in popularity, and can be a dangerous influence for the children in our communities. When humane investigators find instances of animal fighting, they also often find numerous additional crimes such as drug use, gambling and other forms of violence. This legislation would aid the prosecution of those engaged in animal fighting.

The Vick Case brought national attention to the perils of animal fighting, and it is our responsibility to protect the animals and people of Michigan from this underground and violent activity.

How You Can Help:
To support this important legislation, call or write your state Senator today and ask him or her to support SB 1405 and stronger penalties for animal fighting. Let your Senator know that animal fighting is not only cruelty to animals; it’s also a danger to our communities and our children.
